CARMENERE LOST GRAPE VARIETY
Carmenère is a rich and intensely flavored red wine that is grown in the Chilean wine region of Central Valley. It is a variety of the Bordeaux grapes and is known as the “lost grape” of France. Carmenère was once widely planted in the Bordeaux region of France, but was thought to have been extinct after the phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century. In 1994, it was discovered that some of the Merlot vines in the Colchagua Valley of Chile were not Merlot, but instead Carmenère.
Since its rediscovery, Carmenère has become a signature grape of the Chilean wine industry. Chilean Carmenère wines tend to have an intense ruby-red color, with aromas of dark fruit and spices such as black pepper, and a full-bodied, earthy flavor.
